As parents, everything can seem worrisome. Your child receives routine medical exams on a regular schedule and caring for your child’s eyes is equally important. Medical exams are something that most people have more experience with, so they are not as scary. Pediatric eye exams might be a bit concerning for some of our young patients. At Leroy Vaughn, MD - Eye Care for Diabetics Medical Group Inc., we make sure you and your child are comfortable every step of the way. If you live in or around Inglewood and need a pediatric eye exam for your little one, contact Dr. Leroy Vaughn today.
Pediatric eye exams often begin within a few days of birth. Your baby will have his or her eyes examined while your child is still in the hospital. The first eye exam in the office should take place sometime before your child is a year old. When your child goes to the pediatrician, they get a vision screening which is not the same as an eye exam.
If you notice anything unusual about the way your child looks at books or if your child’s eyes don't seem to be focusing, it is time to consider a comprehensive eye exam. Some of the things that are checked during this exam include:
The next major exam will be when your child is ready to enter school for the first time. It is vital to their ability to learn that they can see the board. Some of the tests our ophthalmologist will perform are the Ishihara Test, which checks for color vision, random dot stereopsis, and LEA symbols. A retinoscope is used to check the reflection on the retina. Your child’s eyes may be dilated with drops. These may have a mild sting when applied but are safe.
When your child needs a pediatric eye exam with an eye doctor, Leroy Vaughn, MD - Eye Care for Diabetics Medical Group Inc. is here to provide the quality eye care your child needs to succeed. Call our team today at (310) 671-0909 or reach us through our website by using our online contact form.
