Diabetic retinopathy is a severe condition which can affect your vision, and in some cases, cause blindness. If you have been diagnosed with this condition, you probably have a lot of questions. Our ophthalmologist, Dr. Leroy Vaughn, answers some of the most common questions our patients have about this disease.

If I don't notice any problems with my vision, should I be worried?

If your retinopathy is under control to the point that you do not notice an adverse effect on your vision, that's a good thing. It does not mean that the condition is completely cured, however. Keeping your diabetes under control is a critical part of managing this disease, but you still need to check in with an eye doctor for a yearly eye exam.

How will I know if my vision is changing?

It is possible to go for years with this condition without noticing any symptoms, but the first symptoms that most people notice are the presence of dark spots in their field of vision. It is also common to see streaks in your vision that resembles cobwebs. While these spots may disappear on their own, it is important to have an eye exam as soon as you notice these spots, even if they go away. Dark spots indicate that information is not being transmitted to the brain properly, and an eye doctor will need to diagnose the cause.

How can I cure this?

As long as you have diabetes, diabetic retinopathy will be a complication of your life. The best way to manage the disease and manage your eye care is to keep your diabetes under control.

If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy and you live in the Inglewood, CA, area, schedule an appointment with our ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
